Types of Hauntings can be quite varied.  They can run the gamut from the benign, which can still be frightening, to the more extreme examples of elemental and demonic hauntings.  Below are various types of hauntings that are experienced by people.   If you are experiencing any of these and would like to quietly and confidentially request help, please contact me.

Residual Hauntings

Residual hauntings are actually fairly common, and is probably the most common haunting that is experienced.  These are also sometimes referred to as "psychic impressions," and are typified as a ghost or event being seen over and over doing the same thing.  Most footsteps and ghostly noises that are heard in a haunted place are of the residual haunting type and can be heard over and over, sometimes precipitated by a trigger, although whether that trigger is meterological or geomagnetic conditions, some type of release of energy, or the witness’s own sensitivity or energy signature remains a mystery.  For example, at The Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana, people often report the sounds of dinner guests enjoying themselves in the main house, even though it is empty!

Think of a residual haunting as a movie being re-run on TV day after day.  It’s like a recording of events that, due to perhaps strong emotional energy attached to it, imprints itself somehow on the environment where the event took place.  One of the primary defining characteristics of a residual haunting is that the entities that manifest are unaware of and u7nable to interact with persons who are experiencing them.  Therefore, these are the “safest” hauntings there are, and so a living person can witness one with no fear.  Residual hauntings are past events playing in the present, but with no interaction with today.  It is a common theory that most residual hauntings occur in places built over top of limestone, quartz stone and/or water.  These seem to act as a transmitter, perhaps creating the perfect environment to allow the residual haunting energy to manifest.

How can residual hauntings occur?  As physical beings, we give off energy.  Objects in the environment have the capability to absorb and discharge energy if the conditions are right.  So theoretically, it is possible for an event or person to imprint its energy upon a place or the objects within that place, and then for those objects to release that energy when activated by an unknown trigger mechanism.

Intelligent Hauntings

Intelligent hauntings are those in which a ghost, or the spirit of a person who was once alive, interacts
with the living.  It is intelligent in that it is believed to be the conscious spiritual energy of a once-living
person that is, or is attempting to, communicate with those on the earthly plane.  The spirit has elected
for some reason to stay or perhaps just visit the physical world, due to a strong connection with a
person, place, or thing.  Intelligent hauntings may also occur due to a spirit's compelling need to
deliver a message from the other side of the grave, or to watch over loved ones.  In addition, it is also
plausible that intelligent hauntings occur due to attachments the ghostly person feels through
memories, trauma, tragedy or any other emotional tie, effectively binding the consciousness to:

· not realize the person's body is deceased
· complete unfinished earthly business
· re-live traumatic events while trying to comprehend them
· affiliate with loved ones or persons the ghost finds some connection with
· refuse to let go due to fear of death and moving on to a new plan of existence

It is important to understand that intelligent hauntings do not involve the devil, demons, or evil spirits
as traditionally understood-just disembodied people with varying personalities.  Some ghostly people
are negative, while others are positive and very upbeat.  Think, for example, of the many people you
meet here on earth that range from joyous to downright angry and dark. Ghosts, being spirits of
people, are no different.  One must understand that a person does not lose the consciousness he or she
had upon death of the physical body.  Though not common, angry spirits can be encountered, no
doubt.  Being trapped in the earthly realm as a spirit can be seen as a form of hell; for it is fear that
holds intelligent hauntings here no matter what the intent.  Whether it is worry about someone, anger
over having died and suffering loss, condemnation, or doubt, all are simply different forms of fear or

Intelligent hauntings manifest typically in a variety of ways. Strange sounds or disembodied voices,
spiritual presence (goosebumps, etc.), seeing a physical manifestation of the spirit or quickly moving
shadows, hiding or moving objects, doors opening and closing, and disturbance of electrical devices
are all examples of ghosts attempting to gain someone's attention and communicate from the spirit
realm.  The best thing one can do is remain open to the contact and listen to what is heard deep within,
as that is how ghosts primarily communicate.  Speak to the spirit in words of peace, understanding,
and love.  If it frightens you, tell it so and ask it to please go away.  If it persists, you may want to
contact a paranormal investigator.

Personal Hauntings

Much rarer are situations in which it is not a place, but rather a person that is being haunted.  Can people be haunted?  The reality is, over the years there have been several hundred cases of people all over the world who are followed by strange paranormal entities no matter where they go.  Though these spirits are generally invisible, in fact only usually coming out when the person is alone or with one or two other people in a quiet room, they are constantly experiencing paranormal activity as a result or feeling emotions that are clearly not theirs.

The individuals who experience such hauntings have a tendency to be very sensitive to the paranormal, often having psychic experiences leading all the way back to a very young age.  After they come into adulthood, however, they push these contacts they made with the other side in the form of imaginary friends or guardian angels (whatever they believe the case to be) into the back of their minds and forget about them.  Soon they are living in a purely mundane physical world with no connection to the paranormal or the spiritual.  However, strange experiences continue to happen to them.

Common experiences with personal hauntings often include sudden movement or figures darting about at the corner of their eye, sudden sounds coming from somewhere unknown, whispers and disembodied voices often heard as if someone were whispering in the person’s ear.  But over time it becomes more drastic, and might even result eventually in others-friends, family, and other frequent visitors-experiencing the haunting full time as well.  It is also notable that sometimes families can be haunted as well.

But what should be done?  There are several methods prescribed by psychics.  The first of course is to consult with a religious guide such as a priest or an experienced paranormal investigator.  Both have been met with variable levels of success as with any other method.  Smudge sticks, which are constructed specifically for cleansing and which can be either made or purchased in several forms can also be utilized.  Also, there is always direct communication-either verbal or mental projection.  Simply telling an entity that has been making its presence known to go away is often enough to get rid of the problem.  Always speak with confidence and authority, and make those who have also been affected by the haunting aware of your intentions.  This may have to be repeated several times, but be persistent.  If the problem continues, contact an experienced paranormal investigator.
Poltergeist Hauntings

Poltergeists or poltergeist hauntings may be the most misunderstood type of haunting, as some believe that poltergeist hauntings are not even a haunting at all.  Poltergeist is a German word which literally means "noisy ghost."  The defining characteristic of a poltergeist is the manipulation of the physical environment such as the movement of objects, loud knocking and rapping sounds, physical attack, small fires, etc, often centered around a particular person.

A common theory concerning poltergeist hauntings is that that they are caused by psychokinesis-the ability to move things by power of the mind alone.  The reason for this is because typically poltergeist hauntings center around an adolescent girl in the household, and it is believed that females are more in touch with their psychic sides than males, even if only subconsciously.  Typically, this central person is experiencing strong emotional turmoil, and the energy being built up and then discharged by that emotional disturbance is strong enough to cause the movement of objects, knocking sounds (and other noises), the turning on and off of lights and electrical appliances, etc.  Usually the person whom the activity centers around is unaware that they are the one causing the disturbance.

However, poltergeist hauntings cannot simply be written off as being caused by psychokenesis.  The disturbances may well be caused by a ghost or an elemental spirit trying to communicate a message to the living, and it has been suggested that the central figure in a poltergeist haunting can actually bring additional energy which the troubled ghost uses to manifest with physical attacks or manipulation.  This can be especially true if one is somewhat psychic or particularly fearful.  Malevolent entities often seem to feed off of baser energies such as fear.  This is when more harmful attacks can occur.  Sometimes the effects of a poltergeist are more playful than harmful.  However, when activity seems to increase in frequency and intensity, especially when there are reports of scratches, bites, harmful objects being put in one's way (such as glass shards on a pillow or tacks under a bed sheet) have been noted, it could be indicative of a demonic entity being present.

Elemental Hauntings

Elementals, once called “daimons” by the ancient Greeks, are thought to be guardian spirits, usually assigned to one of the four elements, and therefore are spirits of a particular place (spiritus loci).  Elementals are not, and never were, human, and are believed to be pure spirits:  the living forces behind the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water.  It should also be noted that with the advent of the Judeo-Christian worldview the daimon, in all its forms, became “demon.”

Elementals can be helpful, harmful, mirthful, and eccentric, but are also considered to be quite powerful.  Elemental hauntings are often equivalent to poltergeist or demonic hauntings.  They are most often associated with magic and the occult and usually take place in isolated, mountainous, desert, or forest settings.  It is rare for elementals to haunt within a city setting.  The exception to this is if a person or group performs magical/magical rituals, which directly invoke the elementals.  Buildings used for religious purposes could possibly be elementally haunted.

All types of elementals can cause mental unbalance in sensitive people.  It is interesting to note that there is a fifth type of elemental which is man-made.  This is known as a tulpa or an homunculus and are often unconscious thought-form creations that occur when a human mentally obsesses on an idea, object, or person.  Conscious thought-form creation is a deliberate act of magic wherein a magician creates an entity for a specific purpose, infusing it through mental visualization with energy from his or her own vitality.  The entity becomes a problem when it comes back to be revitalized by the creator’s energy and doesn’t have a properly prepared vessel to inhabit, or has been created by an inexperienced person dabbling in the occult.  Some apparent poltergeist and/or “self-haunting” phenomenon may be an artificial elemental or tulpa haunting.

There is a vast amount of anecdotal material regarding elementals and their behavior.  The material spans from antiquity to modern times.  However, the folkloric associations of elementals leaves the paranormal investigator in a bit of a quandary.  We have make determinations regarding our cases based on folklore, mythology, religious, and anecdotal literature.  And even if we are skeptics, it is beneficial to our clients to have an understanding of the cultural conditioning that influences their belief systems.

Demonic Hauntings

Demons are evil supernatural beings of intelligence, wit and power. They are not human spirits as demons were never human to begin with.  They have the ability to invade our homes, attach themselves to objects and humans, and cause both mental and emotional torture by attacking or possessing humans.  They can morph into any shape they wish, from humans to animals, before your eyes. They are neither male nor female, but will change to whatever meets their need at the time.  Demons are most commonly seen as black masses standing in doorways or in corners of the room and contrary to most belief, you won't see them as long-horned, "goat-looking" or "ram-headed" creatures.  They have a hatred for mankind and think of us as lowly and stupid.  Most demonic entities like a challenge and are incredibly conniving; they may have you believing they are good spirits or may appear to have gone away, only to confront you again at the least expected and most vulnerable moment.  Their main goal is to break down a person's free will in order to make way for possession, beginning as oppression.  This can take days, months or years, but time is of no concern to them... they don't give up easily.

Demonic hauntings usually start in a subtle way: faucets dripping, scratching in the walls, thumping sounds, knocking.  These behaviors typically share the characteristics of a poltergeist haunting, but will become more extreme.  As the seriousness progresses, your blankets may be pulled off the bed, things fall off the walls, perhaps the bed shakes violently, maybe you begin hearing growling sounds.  It does this because it wants you to know it's in control and wants you to fear it.  The more you fear them, the more control they have over you.  Another indication of a demonic haunting is sudden emotional and psychological chaos and discord within the household, as well as shared dreams of a disturbing nature, sudden feelings of anger and violence, and/or the compulsion to harm oneself.  Demons feed off this negative energy and the more they can generate, the stronger they can become.  However, because of the nature psychological and emotional nature attacks one must be certain that there is not an underlying mental illness or emotional disturbance.  A psychologist or psychiatrist should be consulted before one consults a paranormal investigator or priest.

Once they succeed in creating an atmosphere of fear, they start to exaggerate their powers, then the personal attacks begin....scratches on the skin, pushing, shoving and hitting.  One mark often associated with a demon attack is a scratch of three lines, which is believed to be the sign of the mocking of the Holy Trinity.  The air in the affected area will feel thick like fog, sometimes the light will be dimmed, as though being absorbed, and the temperature will drastically change, usually becoming notably colder or warmer.  It's common for several entities to exist in one location with a strong evil presence seemingly controlling the others and not allowing them to cross over. These demons come into our world through a gateway, which is often either a cave, a well, or natural hole in the earth usually not more than 10 or 20 feet away from a haunting.  Places that are believed to have crossing "Ley Lines" also act as a magnet or portal for demons, as well as other entities.  Another way for them to enter is through a "door", usually opened up by inexperienced persons using a Ouija Board or delving into some form of black magic, witchcraft, or demonic worship that the person is ill-prepared to be meddling in.  In this case, the person most likely doesn't know what they have gotten themselves into unless it's done deliberately.

A demonic haunting requires immediate action; the longer it's allowed to remain, the stronger it becomes. You will need to seek the help from an experienced paranormal investigator, demonologist, or a local church.  In many cases, it will usually take the exorcism by an ordained priest to rid your home of the demon.  There are, however, other methods that may work.

It is believed that you can possess the ability to drive it away on your own.  You will have to gather the strength within yourself and "Command" it to leave. Don't taunt, don't confront, don't get angry, and most of all, do not show fear. It's believed that it's like a code of conduct with them. Sometimes they will leave, but often not right away.  It takes persistence and the ability to deal with the situation without fear.  Also, it's been said that demons don't like to be ignored. If it can't get you to fear it, then it has no power over you, although that doesn’t mean it won’t stop trying.

Something else that might help is smudging. To smudge your house, open the windows and light a bundle of dried sage or smudging sticks (available at most health stores). Sage is believed to clear away negative energy and spirits. Catch the ashes with a plate held underneath the bundle and walk around your home to cleanse it with the sage smoke. Make sure the smoke covers every part of the home, especially corners, closets, basements and attics. It is also said that sprinkling holy water throughout the house might work too; although this is not always successful if not done by a priest. All Catholic churches will have holy water available, as well as many other churches. When obtaining holy water it is customary to leave a small donation, if possible. You will also need to recite a prayer when smudging or using holy water.

There is one thing that you should understand: These methods will not always work. If you truly suspect a demonic haunting, we highly suggest that you DO NOT use any method in any attempt to rid it yourself. A very common belief is that if you hold up a cross or splash holy water around, the demon will not harm you and will leave right away. Yes, these may help in an emergency situation, but it's more likely that it will just anger the entity. Again, this is better left for experienced investigators, ordained priests, or a qualified demonologist.  This type of haunting is a very serious situation and one should seek the help of a professional, such as an experienced paranormal investigator, demonologist, or an ordained priest.  Time is of the essence, so make arrangements immediately.
